“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” - Picasso

Sofia Jaramillo is a Colombian-American adventure and documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Jackson, Wyoming. She studied Spanish at Seattle University and then used her free time to intern for newspapers to learn photojournalism. After college, she interned for the Associated Press in Mexico City and then worked as a staff photographer for a local newspaper in Washington state.

In 2017, Sofia started freelancing and has since then worked for major news outlets such as The New York Times, Outside Magazine and National Geographic. She is a regular contributor to National Geographic Adventure and National Geographic Travel. She has shot outdoor adventure campaigns for various clients such as The North Face, Arc’teryx and La Sportiva.

As a woman of color, a big part of her mission is to uplift and tell the stories of BIPOC and female athletes. Although she’s been mountain biking and skiing since she was a young kid, she especially loves to ride on the undiscovered gravel roads near her home. After bikepacking the Idaho Hot Springs Mtn Bike Route in 2018 she fell in love with the sport and hasn’t stopped since.

Do you feel that you have a good balance in your life?

"I am always striving to find balance, but sometimes I think we put too much of an emphasis on how things should be perfectly balanced. There is beauty in chaos too and sometimes balance just isn't possible when you are trying to achieve big goals. I think what matters is that at the end of the day, you come back and recognize what is important to you and what you need to recenter."
