Juliana Bicycles - Debi Motsch

Debi Motsch

Ten years of competitive XC racing and Debi eventually discovered a love for riding in enduro. Since that time she's traveled from BC, to New Zealand, to Morzine, France, and beyond; sometimes on her own but frequently with other women who share her mission to make mountain biking more accessible to girls.

Where do you call home?

I live in a beautiful place called Annecy (French Alps), between lake and mountains. It’s a perfect playground for mountain biking :)

What’s your day job? What’s your favorite part of your day job? What’s your least favorite part of your day job?

I’m a Mountain Bike Instructor and Guide in summer. I work for various bike schools and guiding company in France. I also organize mountain bike skills camps for women called « Chicks on Bikes », the idea is to bring ladies together to improve their mountain bike skills so they can enjoy all kinds of single tracks and have more fun on their bikes! In winter, I’m working as a Commercial & Communication assistant for Fischer (ski brand).

My favorite part of this job is being outside, sharing my passion for mountain bike, helping people to be more confident on their bike, and the best reward is when people have the smile all day long!

My least favorite part of the job is probably when there is a poor weather and you just want to be in your couch with a hot chocolate! But it’s part of the game and sometimes it’s not that bad as you thought!

Who’s your favorite riding buddy and why?

I’m lucky to have met amazing ladies and gentlemen when I’m racing, riding, traveling or coaching, so I can’t choose one favorite buddy! They all like the same kind of rides and adventures like, discovering new trails, enjoying the breathtaking landscape, having a beer after a ride and doing it again and again!

When did you start mountain biking? Why did you start? What made you a lifer (was it a moment, a ride, a trip, etc.?)?

I started mountain biking when I was 7. At school we had to choose an activity for our free time, my classmates chose mountain bike and I wanted to be with them. I was at the local bike school and I have never stopped. I raced XC for 10 years, and then I started enduro racing and traveling. In 2014, I spent 6 months in BC to do my internship at the BC Bike Race and it was an incredible experience, it has changed my life. Since that trip, I fall in love with MTB more and more. After that, for 6 months I was in New Zealand, traveling through the two islands with my van and my bike, discovering new places and single tracks every day. That was the dream!

What’s the thing you love second to cycling and why?

I love outdoor sports in general, in particularly skiing! I love living with the season. From December to March, I leave my bike in the garage and I ski every weekend. Ski touring provides the same feeling as a mountain bike, the higher you climb, the better is the view. I like comparing a powder day with an amazing singletrack :)

Do you feel that you have a good balance in your life? If yes, how do you achieve that? If no, what's off balance and why?

Now, Yes! I guess it takes time to find a good balance between your job and your passion. For part of the year, I’m a mountain bike instructor & guide, but to me, it’s necessary to have another activity because of the season or if you have an injury. This is why I love living with the season! Summer is for MTB and working outside, and winter is for skiing and working at the office.

What’s your favorite ride snack?

I love a mix of salty and sweet snack  For example almond, nuts and dry fruits.

If you left for a big mountain bike trip tomorrow, what're the top 3 things you couldn’t live without?

Rain Jacket. You never know how the weather will be in the mountains and there is nothing worse than being wet! A rain jacket keeps me warm and dry, and it’s doesn’t take much space in my backpack.

Chocolate! It’s the best therapy :) If you had an amazing day it even tastes better, and if you had a bad day, it makes you feel better!

My Phone. I use it for everything: taking pictures, listening to music, navigate with GPS if I don’t know the trails. Well, my phone is more for the camera! I love keeping memories and sharing pictures with my family and friends.

What’s your favorite local trail and why?

My favorite local trail is in « Le Semnoz » mountain. It starts at the top of the mountain with a beautiful view of Annecy Lake and Mont Blanc and finishes at the Lake. And it’s about 45 min-1 h and 1200m descent downhill through a beautiful forest. There is all kind of terrain, from rocky, rooty and technical parts to flowy and loamy parts. It’s pure happiness!! And there are tons and tons of possibilities from top to bottom!

Is there another trail/area that you could compare it to?

Beaufortain reminds me a little bit of Annecy, but I would say it’s even better!! It’s my favorite place close to home for riding enduro trails. Each run with the shuttle is at least 1000m descent of pure single track in an amazing backyard.

What’s one other thing in your life that is as good as this trail?

Living in a beautiful place and feeling like I’m in holiday all year long even if I’m working. Going to the lake for the lunch, finish a ride in the lake, living with friends, having a ski resort 40 minutes from home or even having beautiful trails right behind my door is a real treat.
